I Need a Grant

I Need a Grant I forget that new writers enter the profession daily, and Im most reminded when a slew of them write me after seeing FundsforWriters.com for the first time. The first thing they see is GRANTS, and that throws their fledgling minds into overdrive, wondering how they can find some generous grant provider to offer money to a new writer. Its like rumors that some government agency will pay off your mortgage or write off your debt. In writing, nobody offers you a free lunch. You pay for that lunch. You can hope for a coupon here and there, or a free sandwich if you buy a coke, but nobody is going to offer lunch for free. Lets look at grants. Why do grants exist? Nobody cares about that, but grants have missions, too. Grants have specific purposes, and providing money to people who dont have it isnt the leading purpose. Its more about what someone wants to do with that money that matters. 1) They are created to fill an identified need. 2) They are created to make a difference with humanity. 3) They must demonstrate to the world that the money they spend has done great things. 4) They answer to high authorities about how effective and efficient theyve been with the money they doled out. 5) Their money depends upon politics, donations, and the economy. In other words, there arent pots of money waiting for people to apply for a share. The applicants for any grant must qualify using the following mindsets: 1) As if they were applying for a job, 2) As if they were promoting a product, and 3) As if they were seeking a loan at the bank. As noble as grants sound, grants are a sort of business venture for the grant provider. If they dont do well with the money they provide . . . if the projects that obtain grants do not demonstrate a positive end . . . then the grant provider has failed. The results? Less grant money to use in the future or even the dissolution of the entire grant entity. Lets visit a scenario of a new writer seeking a grant: A new writer may be from Montana and want to write about a boy who immigrates to New York and experiences a coming-of-age story. The writer asks for a grant to live in New York for several months to do research and think about how he will write the story. Nobody will fund this grant. Why? 1) There is no need to fund unpublished writers. There is a glut of writers out there as it is. 2) The writer is not experienced and cannot assure the grant provider they can write. 3) The writer cannot assure the grant provider they can publish. 4) The writer cannot assure the grant provider they have a market for the work. 5) The grant provider has to have a mission that somehow fits the story, the writer, or the writers need. Sowhen you think of a grant, think of it as a loan. They give you money based upon your qualifications, you have to follow their rules, and you pay it back with your projects success. Grants have needs, too, and they are careful with how they write their checks.

Honor and Duty- Rudyard Kipling Essay Essay Three of Kipling’s poems, Young British Soldier, Tommy and Gunga Din were all components to a volume of poems entitled the Barack-Room Ballads. They were written in a Cockney dialect to gain support for the British military during the World Wars from the larger population of lower class people. They were used to convince the public that if they did not financially support the war efforts, they would be dishonorable. The duty of the people was to show support for the fighting. It was the only way they could show their loyalty to the cause and their country, and contribute to it. Kipling’s poems, in a way, were propaganda and the intent of the messages to the people were received. It convinced many to be eager to do their honor and duty to help the war effort by donating money and young men to join the army. Cash flow increased and soon the British ranks were filled with fresh soldiers from all classes. In addition to the effects on the citizens, the poems were also used to increase the feeling of honor and duty among the soldiers serving in the military. They became classic military fighting slogans that inspired courage and persistence through some of their harsh conditions. In Tommy, it was spoken about the poor treatment received when they entered local pubs or walked along the streets. The soldier of Kipling’s time defended the British Empire but was also picked at because of his low birth in the class system. A large portion of the soldiers who entered the military were just commoners. Gunga Din focuses more around race. The main character is an Indian water boy who carried water for British soldiers. He is treated as a lowly servant, yet is also seen as courageous when he is needed by a soldier on the battle-field. The poem is written through a soldier’s eyes and describes Gunga Din’s abuse from the others due to his dark skin tone. Kipling’s The Young British Soldier depicts a fighting soldier’s experience in the Afghan Wars. Twelve thousand British soldiers were killed and it was named Auckland’s Folly because it had been such a disaster to Britain. It explains how the young british soldier is expected to fight with duty and honor and contrarily describes the horrific experiences that soldiers would go through on the battlefield. Kipling’s poems impacted the British public greatly; it helped pull in money for the vast expenses of war while at the same time drawing in needed recruits for their military. For the soldiers who faced brutal deaths on the battlefields, the poems were chanted with pride and they helped lessen the painful reality.

Tuberculosis :: Health, Diseases

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection that can attack any part of the body, but it is normally found in the lungs (Huether, McCance, Brashers and Rote, 2008,). TB is an infection caused by a acid-fast bacillus also know as Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Huether et al. 2008) It is one of the leading causes of death in Asia, China, Indian, Indonesia and Pakistan (Huether et al. 2008). These countries show that in most cases the incidence rate is highest in young adults, and are usually the result from re-infection in recent infections. The spread of TB is attributed to the emigration of infected people from high-prevalent countries, substance abuse, poverty, transmission in crowd places, and the lack of proper medical care for the infected individuals (Huether et al. 2008). Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through airborne droplets, when a person that is infected with TB coughs, sneezes, talks, and/or sings letting tiny droplet to be released into the air(Bare, Smeltzer, Hinkle, and Cheever, 2008). TB cannot be spread through touching inanimate objects, food, or drinks (Bare et al. 2008). The person must be in the same area an affected individual is in and inspirate the droplets to be affected. Once the bacillus is inspired into the lungs, the bacilli start to multiply causing lung inflammation also known as nonspecific pneumontis (Huether et al. 2008). To cause an immune response the bacilli will travel through lymphatic system and become lodged in the lymph nodes (Huether et al. 2008). Lung inflammation causes the activation of the alveolar macrophages and neutrophils (Huether et al. 2008). Granulomas, new tissue masses of live and dead bacilli, are surrounded by macrophages, which form a protective wall. They then transform into a fi brous tissue mass, the central portion is called a ghon tubercle (Bare et al. 2008). The bacterial then necrotic, forming a cheesy mass, this mass may become calcified and form a collagenous scar (Bare et al. 2008). At this point, the bacteria becomes dormant and there is no further progression of the active disease. The disease can become active again by re-infection or activation of the dormant bacteria (Bare et al. 2008). TB can be classified as latent or active (Bare et al. 2008). TB that is a latent is bacilli that are isolated with a tubercle can remain, dormant, causing no symptoms. It is formed by an Ordinance No. XXIV of 1999 promulgated by the Governor of the Punjab to fulfil the needs, wants and workforce of local industry by utilizing the vast network of training institutions. a. History TEVTA in collaboration with Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Lahore has established its help-Desk within the premises of Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Lahore. A debate that has been going on for some time has always been race-based jury nullification. Jury nullification does have some good point in which it benefits the criminal justice system as it allows the jury to interpret the law and come up with an agreement based on their beliefs. There are reports and statistics that prove discrimination is alive and that a persons race does affect the length and severity of the punishment assigned to him or her. Racial- based nullification can be beneficial in addressing the unfair issues in the criminal justice system. According to the article, Race Based Jury Nullification, it indicated that Jury nullification occurs when a criminal- trial jury refuses to convict a defendant despite proof of guilt because the jurors believe the law is unjust or is being unjustly applied (Rivera). When this method is applied and used in an honest manner, it could possibly to help even out the playing fields for racial based jury nullification for minorities in t he courtroom when it is time for sentencing based on the law rather than on race. Many of the candidates picked to be a part of the jury knows about jury nullification. Anywhere in the world a jury just like a judge can nullify a criminal case. Based on race many of these cases are  nullified even though the evidence proves guilt. For example OJ Simpsons case proved that he was guilty but since the Rodney King incident occurred prior too, he was nullified by the jury. Often times it is not supported because it allows a biased judgment to be formed not based on guilt of the person but based on race. Majority of the times setting criminals free to commit the same crimes again. Being acquitted of all charges is usually how jury nullifications occur. Many believe that racial nullification should be possible for those that have committed non-violent crimes even if the evidence shows that the person is in fact guilty. The contribution to the criminal justice system is that this would allow the prison system to have more space for those that commit more violent crimes regardless of their race. As we see jury nullification can either be beneficial or it can truly destroy the criminal justice system. Courtrooms need to recognize that there needs to be no biases within the system or people need to be blindfolded before being a part of a case. There needs to be a model set forth in regards to the influence that justice should outweigh any feelings in regards to race and one should serve time for the crime that they was convicted of. African American, or Hispanic or minorities races apply society ought to come close to their effort and be aware of its supporting nature and their choice to practice their authority in benefit of their area. In all these cases, the juror should be educated through his or her viewpoint of what is just and unjust. An opinion paper mentioned that all Black Americans should partake in race- based jury nullification and that to do so would bring about changes in how the justice system handled minority cases, (Jemal, 1997). Other valid points are made b y Jemel, supporting his belief in race-based jury nullification by stating The system is designed to put blacks in jail for largely economic crimes while letting child molesters, rapist and murderers go free (1997). After doing all the necessary research, I stand to say that I am against race based nullification. As stated the juror knows what the defendant has done and yet still allows him or her to be acquitted of the crimes because they feel bad for them or the most used their race. These are biased reasons that should not be used when a person is involved with a criminal case. Race nullification either helps or hinders the system and we are always fighting for a better system. The 14th Amendment helps supports my stance by stating  that All persons receive a fair trial by their peers and that can have no effect at all on the decisions made by the jury. The jury is also sworn into the court by swearing on a Bible that they will not only take into consideration the evidence presented by both parties and that they will not allow for any personal feelings or personal bias to get in the way of their vote. Upon reading this paper it provide detailed information about the influence that ethnicity had on courtroom proceeds and judicial practices, the arguments that were for and against race based nullification with contemporary examples. Where I stand on this subject is evident based on my response and I am a firm believer in equality for all. Racism comes in all forms as we can see.

The word geometry derives from the Ancient Greek geo (earth) and metron (measurement). â€Å"Earth – measure† is a branch of mathematics concerned with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space. Geometry is one of the oldest mathematical sciences. Where is geometry? Geometry is everywhere. Everywhere in the world you see geometry . It is happening in the world all around us. It is found in art, architecture, engineering, robotics, land surveys, astronomy, sculptures, space, nature, sports, machines, cars and much more. Geometry is used and found everywhere in the world in some way or the other. Man-made structures that include geometric structures would be almost everything. If a person looks closely, they would see geometry in the structure. Nature even has its own geometric structures. The world is a big sphere, so is the moon and the other 8 planets in the Solar System. The whole Universe is a geometric structure, which proves that not only man-made structures are geometric but that even nature has geometry. Geometry exists even in things a human cannot see, just know it’s there. : Geometry in buildings and structures All the structures in the world are geometric. This is a structure with basic geometric shapes found everywhere. This is a modern reconstruction of the English Wigwam. As you can see there the door way is a rectangle, and the wooden panels on the side of the house are made up of planes and lines. Except for really planes can go on forever. The panels are also shaped in the shape of squares. The house itself is half a cylinder. This is a modern day skyscraper at MIT. The openings and windows are all made up of parallelograms. Much of them are rectangles and squares. This is a parallelogram kind of building. This is the Pyramids, in Indianapolis. The pyramids are made up of pyramids, of course, and squares. There are also many 3D geometric shapes in these pyramids. The building itself is made up of a pyramid, the windows a made up of tinted squares, and the borders of the outside walls and windows are made up of 3D geometric shapes. This is the Hancock Tower, in Chicago. With this image, we can show you more 3D shapes. As you can see the tower is formed by a large cube. The windows are parallelogram. The other structure is made up of a cone. There is a point at the top where all the sides meet, and There is a base for it also which makes it a cone. This is a Chevrolet SSR Roadster Pickup. This car is built with geometry. The wheels and lights are circles, the doors are rectangular prisms, the main area for a person to drive and sit in it a half a sphere with the sides chopped off which makes it 1/4 of a sphere. If a person would look very closely the person would see a lot more shapes in the car. These were all basic geometry shapes in the world today. There are a lot more structure and things that contain geometry but that would be too many to list. A golden rectangle with longer side a and shorter side b, when placed adjacent to a square with sides of length a , will produce a similar golden rectangle with longer side a + b and shorter side a. This illustrates the relationship The golden rectangle R, constructed by the Greeks, has the property that when a square section is removed, the remainder is another golden rectangle; that is, with the same proportions as the first. Square removal can be repeated infinitely in which case corresponding corners of the square form an infinite sequence of points on the Golden Spiral, the unique logarithmic spiral with this property. The sides are in the â€Å"golden proportion† (1:1. 618o34). The Golden Rectangle is found everywhere in nature and as well as in the work of men. It somehow appeals to our aesthetic sense of beauty. The Golden Rectangle was considered by the Greeks to be of the most pleasing proportions, and it was used in ancient architecture. The ancient Parthenon Temple in Greece is the most famous example of the use of Golden Rectangle. The Architects of the Parthenon used the Golden Proportion (Rectangle) in a number of areas in its design. For example, on the gable side of the building, the width and height of the building combine to create a Golden Rectangle. The total height of the building is approximately 1. 618o34 times the height to the top of the columns, and the frieze sculptures (columns) and metopes (sculptures) on the entablature mimic those proportions as well. The Great Pyramid of Giza is also built on these proportions. The Golden Rectangle is prevalent in the construction of trees, architecture, music, human and animal bodies and even in art ( the Golden Rectangle is found in the Mona Lisa). FRACTAL A fractal is â€Å"a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least) a reduced-size copy of the whole,† a property called self-similarity. While fractals are a mathematical construct, they are found in nature, which has led to their inclusion in artwork. They are useful in medicine, soil mechanics, seismology, and technical analysis. Approximate fractals are easily found in nature. These objects display selfs include clouds, river networks, mountain ranges, snow- flakes, cauliflower, and systems of blood vessels and pulmonary vessels and ocean waves. Trees and ferns are fractal in nature and can be modeled on a computer by using recursive algorithm (an effective method expressed as an finite list of well-defined instructions for calculating a function). The connection between fractals and leaves is currently being used to determine how much carbon is contained in trees. Fractal patterns have also been found in paintings, which appear to be composed of chaotic dripping and splattering, computer analysis has found fractal patterns in some work of art. Fractals are also used in the classification of histopathology (refers to the microscopic examination of tissue) slides in medicine, signal and image compression, seismology and even in the generation of new music and T-shirts and fashion. Parabola A parabola is a conic section, the intersection of a right circular conical surface and a plane parallel to a generating straight line of that surface. Given a point (the focus) and a corresponding line (the directix) on the plane, the locus of points in that plane that are equidistant (equal distance) from them is a parabola. The line perpendicular to the directix and passing through the focus (that is the line that splits the parabola through the middle) is called the â€Å"axis of symmetry†. Parabolas can open up, down, left, right, or in some arbitrary direction. The parabola has many important applications, from automobile headlight reflectors to the design of ballistic missiles. They are frequently used in Physics, Engineering, and many other areas. In nature, approximations of parabolae and paraboloids (such as catenary curves) are found in many diverse situatuons. The best known instance of the parabola in the history of Physics is the trajectory (the path a moving object follows through space as a function of time) of a particle or body in motion under the influence of a uniform gravitational field without air resistance (for instance, a baseball flying through the air, neglecting air friction). Another situation in which parabolae may arise in nature is in two-body orbiys, for example, of a small planetoid or other object under the influence of the gravitation of the Sun. The best known paraboloids is the parabolic reflector, which is a minor or similar reflective device that concentrates light or other forms of electromagnetic radiation to a common focal point. Aircraft used to create a weightless state for purposes of experimentation, such as NASA’s â€Å"Vomit Comet†, follow a vertically parabolic trajectory for brief periods in order to trace the course of an object in free fall. Which produces the same effect as zero gravity for most purposes. Astronomy Astromomy is the scientific study of celestial objects such as stars, planets, comets and galaxies. Being one of the oldest sciences. Astronomy is concerned with evolution and the formation nad development of the universe. Our galaxy is filled with many geometric shapes, from the stars forming certain angles to form a constellation, to the shape of the many planets found in it. The Greeks used geometry to understand the stars and the way that our galaxy works. Geometry helped them to determine how the planets orbited the Sun, and also to measure the planets, Sun and moons. Shapes The Sun, moon, and all the planets in the solar system are all shaped as a sphere. This earth is actually an â€Å"oblate spheriod†, but the reason why these all share a common shape is because of the force of gravoty. The spheroid shape allows the Earth to rotate, and all points of mass are within a certain radius of the cebter so it is a low energy shape. Angles forming constellations The stars in the sky paint certain pictures that are known as constellations. Perharps one of the most natural and earliest sightings of certain shapes, constellations have been noted for ages. Many shapes are contained in constellations. For example, â€Å"Sagittarius† is composed of two triangles, one quadilateral, and one trapezoid. Angles can be seen in the images that these constellations make. Geometry in orbits Orbits are the path of a celestial body as it revolves around another body. Early settlers thought that the Earth was at the center of the Universe, and that Sun, moon and stars and naked eye planets revolved around the Earth. Scientist such as Ptomely and Aristotle embraced this theory, but geometry helped to prove it wrong. When Nicholaus Copernicus formualted helicentrit cosmology, it was discovered that the Sun was the center of the the Solar System and that planets and stars revolved around it. The orbits that are made have three distinct shapes – ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas. Eccentricity= parameter of the orbit that defines its absolute shape Our Solar System is a map of many geometric features, and geometry is very useful in understanding and figuring out astronomical aspects. Optical illusions Optical illusions are deceptive or misleading visuals that trick your mind. They make it appear as though something is different than it really is. There are many kinds of optical illusions in the world. There are illusions that involve: ? Movement ?Luminance ( Contrast ?Colour ?3D and space ?Angles This illusion is called the â€Å"Cafe Wall Illusion†. It appears that the horizontal lines slope upwards and downward. However, the horizontal rows are actually parallel. If we were to measure all of the angles of the square blocks, they would be 90 degrees. This proves that the lines are parallel because if they really did slope, the angles of the blocks would ch ange as they got to the smaller end. Here is another example so that you can further see the geometry in optical illusions: This type of illusion is called the â€Å"Hering illusion†. It was discovered by the German physiologist Ewald Hering in 1861. Because of the thick lines of the circle, the sides of the shape in the middle appear to be bent inwards. In reality, the shape is a perfect square with straight sides. Just like the Cafe Wall example, if we were to measure the angles of the square they would be perfect right angles, proving that the curvature is just an illusion. Geometry in fashion If you were to look around your home, or mall, or anywhere else you would notice that most of the people around you were wearing clothing and other fashion pieces with geometrical patterns all over them. The geometrical patterns can be as simple as a triangle, circle, square, etc, or as intricate ( having many interrelated parts or facets) or tessellation (a pattern of shapes that fit perfectly together) of the already mentioned shapes. Now, more than ever fashion runaways of New York, Milan and Paris are flooded with geometrical shapes present on designers clothing. Geometrical shapes are not just being used by department store designers but by high fashion designers as well. Prada, Gucci. Versace, and Louis Vuitton are only a few of the high fashion designers that are using intricate geometrical patterns in their collections. One commonly well-known designer took geometrical shapes to another level. Calvin klein designed his entire Spring 2008 collection using geometrical shapes. However he did not just use fabrics that had geometrucal shapes printed on it, he actually made the clothes the models were wearing look geometrical. As you can see in the picture below the modles dress looks as if it is a bunch of triangular pieces placed together. Other types of fashion which contains geometry in them are habdbags and jewelery. Handbags, like clothing, usually have intricate geometrical shapes and or tessellations on them which create the pattern of a handbag. A handbag also comes in many different sizes and the way the sizes are computed and then constructed is done using geometrical equations, such as the area of a shape, the shape of the bag, or the measurements of the lenghts of the different shapes which make up the handbag. Jewelry also has many geometrical aspects to it as well. Not only is the look of the jewelry usually geometrical, such as the repition of shapes, or just the shapes used, but the way jewelry is constructed also has geometrical features. A bracelet or necklace has to be made a certain length and the jewelry pieces have to fit nicely onto a chain. For example, to figure out how many silver beads belong on a Tiffany’s necklace the manufacturer must first measure the length of each bead and compute the amount of beads he/ahe will need to fill the chain. Geometry used to manufacture fashion Obviously when clothes are manufactures and produced for mass sale the clothes have to have a size run, of several different sizes. These sizes and size differences are achieved by using geometry. Each size had to follow certainmeasurements which are crucial to be precise. Clothes of all types, shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, etc can be measured using various geometrical strategies. Sacred geometry â€Å"Go down deep enough into anything and you will gind mathematics. † ~Dean Schlicter They say that the mysteries of the Universe are as vast and numerous as the stars in the sky. While many find answers to their questions in religion or mysticism, others find answers in math and science. But when you combine the two you get a new kind of answer you get Sacred Geometry. Sacred Geometry is geometyr that involves the sacred universal patterns used in the design of everything in our reality; it is a worldview of pattern recognition, a complex system of religious symbols, and structures involving space, time and form. Sacred Geometry is most often seen in architecture and in sacred art. The basic patterns of exixtence are perceived as sacred. Sacred Geometry is the basis some believe that all creation is formed from. In Christianity, the major aymbol for generations has been the Cross. The Cross had become such a religious symbol that people often forget that it is also a geometric shape. The cross is nothing more than an unfolded cube. The Cross was and still is such and influnential shape that many Churches have been and are still being built based on the cross shape. The Cross Many forms observed in nature can be related to geometry. For example, the chambered nautilus grows at a constant rate and so its shell forms a logarithmic spiral to accomadate that growth without changing shape. Also, honeybess construct hexagonal cells to hold their honey. These and other correspondence are seen by believers in sacred geometry to be furthe proof of the cosmic significance of geometric forms. Honeycomb Sunflower The Golden Ratio, geometric ratios, and geometric figures were often employed in the design of Egyptian, ancient Indian, Greek and Roman architecture. Medieval European cathedrals also incorporated symbolic geometry. Indian and Himalayan spiritual communities often constructed temples and fortifications on design plans of mandala and yantra. Yantra Yin and Yang The Flower of Life is the modern name given to a geometrical figure composed of multiple evenly –spaced, overlapping circles. They are arranged to form a flower-like pattern with a sixfold symmetry, similar to a hexagon. The centre of each circle is on the circumference of six surrounding circles of the same diameter. It is considered by some to be a symbol of sacred geometry, said to conatian ancient, religious value depicting the fundamental forms of space and time. It is believed to contain a type of Akashic Records of basic information of all living things. There are many apiritual beliefs associated with the Flower of Life; for example, depiction of the five Platonic Solids are found within the symbol of Metatrons Cube, which may be derived from the Flower of Life pattern. These platonic solids are geometrical forms which are said to act as a template from which all life springs. According to Drunvalo melchizedek, in the Judeo-Christian tradition, the stages which construct the Seed of Life are said to represent the six days of Creation, in which Elohim created life. conclusion In conclusion for my topic, Geometry in the World, I would just like to say that geometry is found everywhere in the world. No matter where you look; up, down, to the right or the left; or what you look at; a car, a building, the sky or the ocean; whether it is a man-made structure or it occurs naturally, you will find geometry in it no matter what. The world is full of Geometry, one of the oldest mathematical sciences, which has been through the ancient eras to the modern ages and is still here to stay for the future without even giving a sign that it is going to finish anytime sooner The strands of our DNA, the corners of our eye, snow-flakes, pine cones, flower petals, diamond crystals, the branching of trees, a nautilus shell, the star we spin around, the galaxy we spiral within, the air we breathe, and all life forms as we know them emerge out of timeless geometric codes. About the Perseid Meteor Shower

About the Perseid Meteor Shower The Perseid meteor shower is one of the best-known showers in the year. Its one of the great astronomy events of Northern Hemisphere summer and Southern Hemisphere winter. It begins in late July and extends halfway through August, peaking around August 11 or 12th. When conditions are good, you might be able to see dozens of meteors per hour. It all really depends on the weather and what part of the meteor stream Earth moves through each year. Also, the viewing is best when theres no interference from the Moon, although you can still see the brighter meteors as they flash through the sky.   This year (2017) the peak of the shower occurs not long after full moon, so its light will wash out the view of the dimmer meteors. You will likely see a few bright meteors during this time, but dont buy into the hype about the best, the brightest shower.   Its hype and probably clickbait. Do your viewing armed with reasonable expectations and you will be rewarded (unless its cloudy).   What Causes the Perseids? The Perseid meteor shower is really material left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. It passes through our part of the solar system every 133 years. As it travels, this icy dirtball leaves behind tiny grains of ice, dust, rock, and other debris, similar to a messy tourist scattering debris from an automobile. As Earth makes its trip around the Sun, it passes through this debris field with some spectacular results, which we know as the Perseids. As Earth moves through the stream - which can stretch across 14 million to 120 million kilometers of interplanetary space -   its gravity interacts with the particles and spreads the stream out. As the comet passes by, it releases new bursts of particles, constantly refreshing the supply of material that will eventually collide with Earths atmosphere. The stream changes constantly, and this affects future Perseid meteor shower events. Sometimes Earth passes through rather thick areas of the stream, and that results in a heavy meteor shower. Other times, it traverses a thin part of the stream, and we dont see quite so many meteors.   Although there are many meteor showers annually, such as the Leonids, Lyrids, and Geminids, to name a few, the Perseid shower is the most reliable, and can be very spectacular if conditions are right. How it looks depends on several factors - ranging from whether the Moon is nearby (and bright enough to wash out the view) - to what part of the stream Earth encounters. The stream is not uniformly thick with particles, so some years the supply of materials might be less than others. In any given year, observers see anywhere from 50 to 150 meteors an hour on average, increasing at times to around 400 to 1,000 per hour.   The Perseid meteor shower, like other meteor showers, is named after the constellation from which it appears to radiate:  Perseus  (named after a Greek mythological hero)  which is located near Cassiopeia, the Queen. This is also called the radiant, since that is the direction the meteors seem to travel from as they streak across the sky. How Do I View the Perseid Meteor Shower? Meteor showers are easier to view than many other astronomical objects or events. All you need is a fairly dark location and a blanket or lawn chair. Always make sure you have a jacket handy, even if you live in a warm weather climate. Viewing late at night and early in the morning can expose you to some chilly temperatures. It may be useful to have a star chart  to help you locate Perseus, and other constellations while you’re watching, but it’s not a necessity. The shower is active from mid-July each year  when Earth enters the outer edges of the Swift-Tuttle stream.  The best viewing time varies but is often between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m. around the 12th of August. The actual peak time ranges from the 9th to the 14th and then tapers off after that. For August 2017, the best viewing time is after midnight early in the morning of August 12th. There will be some interference from the Moon, which will be just past full. But, you should still be able to see the brightest ones. Also, start watching a few nights before and continue a few nights after; Perseids happen for nearly three weeks. Find a good, safe viewing area where you can get a clear view of the sky. Arrive early to set up, and  give yourself time to adjust your eyes to the darkness. Then, just sit (or lie) back, relax, and enjoy the show. Most of the meteors will appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, and streak across the sky. As you gaze, make note of the colors of the meteors as they streak through the sky. If you see bolides (larger streaks), note how long they take to traverse the sky  and notice their colors, too. Garcia, on the other hand, writes that Buendias were prophetically written by Melquiades a century before the events. This implies that Garcia’s book is in the jurisdiction of the mythological time whereas Allende’s book is more of ancient than legendary (Antoni 20). Antoni further gives instances in the two novels that prove of Allende’s alleged plagiarism. In one instance, he views the characteristics of Tio Marcos found in Allende’s novel being obtained from Garcia’s Melquiades.
